Betsson Buys Rhino Entertainment to Enter Alberta Market

European gambling operator Betsson has purchased Rhino Entertainment for €64.5M to establish a presence in Alberta’s newly launched online gaming sector. The transaction transfers Rhino’s Canadian B2C licenses, staff, infrastructure, and the Casino Days platform to Betsson.

Market Entry and Asset Transfer

Alberta’s regulated iGaming market opened on July 13, with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission issuing licenses to over fifty operators during the initial phase. Betsson was not among the first wave of approved companies. The acquisition resolves this gap by directly transferring active provincial licenses and operational teams. Market projections indicate the Alberta sector will exceed $961M in annual revenue.

Technology Integration and Expansion Strategy

Beyond consumer-facing operations, the deal includes Rhino Entertainment’s in-house front-end and middleware technologies. Betsson plans to integrate these tools to expand its B2B division and increase licensing revenue. The platform already holds approvals in both Ontario and Alberta, providing direct cross-provincial deployment capabilities. This transaction continues Betsson’s ongoing expansion strategy across North America and Europe. The company previously acquired betFIRST in Belgium, INKAbet in Peru, and Colbet in Colombia to strengthen regional market positions.
